Saint Martin of Tours, born around AD316 at Savaria, Pannonia [now modern-day Hungary], became the third Bishop of Tours and is highly esteemed as a great saint by the Church of France. Actually, many locations across Europe have also been placed under his patronage. St. Martin of Tours is the patron of soldiers, the poor, conscientious objectors, tailors, and winemakers.

Martin, the son of pagan parents, was intrigued by Christianity as early as childhood. He was forced to serve in the army at age 15 and so he became a cavalryman in the Roman army. As his story goes, one day when he was around the age of 17, while on horseback, he came across a beggar. Using his sword, Martin cut his cloak in two to give half to the beggar. That night Martin dreamt of Jesus appearing to him wearing the cloak that Martin had given the beggar. This dream convinced him to be baptized, and so he was - the following Easter.

Martin left the army to become a missionary. He preached against Arianism; a heresy that denied the divinity of Christ. He was later persuaded to become the Bishop of Tours, where he founded the monastery Marmoutier. A multitude of miracles have been recorded due to his intercession, while living and after his death. This gentle and humble servant of God is best known for helping those most in need. We celebrate his feast day November 11th and encourage you to continue learning more about Saint Martin of Tours.

Prayer to St. Martin of Tours

Dear St. Martin of Tours, compassionate servant of God, you showed us the power of kindness and humility. You clothed the poor, healed the sick, and led with gentleness, bringing countless souls to Christ. We ask for your intercession today that we may live with the same compassion and courage that filled your heart. Pray for us, dear Saint, that we may have strength in times of hardship, generosity in times of need, and unwavering faith in times of doubt. Help us to be instruments of peace, sharing God's love through our actions and words. Guide us closer to Christ as you were guided, and may your spirit of service inspire us daily. Amen
