Order of Christian Initiation of Adults - OCIA (Formerly RCIA)

Interested in becoming Catholic?  Contact Father Bob to set up your 1st appointment for a conversation about your faith journey. Everyone’s faith journey is different, and yet similar as well. We’re here to help you! You do not need to be a member of the Catholic Church or join the church to attend or learn more about our faith.

The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is the process for adults who desire to join the Catholic faith and for those seeking more information on the Catholic Church.  The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults states that the rite is designed for adults "who, after hearing the mystery of Christ proclaimed, consciously and freely seek the living God.  By God's help they will be strengthened spiritually during their preparation and at the proper time receive the sacraments fruitfully."

OCIA is for:

  • Those who have never been baptized but would like to explore the Catholic Faith.  If choosing to become Catholic, these individuals would receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Holy Communion at the Easter Vigil (the evening before Easter Sunday).
  • Those who were baptized in the Trinitarian Formula (The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit) in a Protestant Church but are interested in becoming Catholic.  If choosing to become Catholic, these individuals would receive the Sacrament of Penance (Confession), make a Profession of Faith, and receive the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion at a Saturday evening or Sunday morning Mass when ready to enter the Catholic Church.
  • Those who were baptized in the Catholic Church and would like to receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion and/or the Sacrament of Confirmation.  The Sacrament of Holy Communion would be received at a Saturday evening or Sunday morning Mass when prepared, and then receive the Sacrament of Confirmation from the Archbishop when ready at a Mass with the Archbishop.

The whole liturgical life of the Church revolves around the Eucharistic sacrifice and the sacraments. There are seven sacraments in the Church: Baptism, Confirmation or Chrismation, Eucharist, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony. - CCC NO 1113
