The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, St. Martin of Tours Conference is a compassionate outreach ministry dedicated to serving those in need within our local community. Inspired by the spirit of St. Vincent, our members provide emergency assistance with food, utilities, and other essentials while upholding the dignity of every person we encounter. Through prayer, service, and generosity, we live out the Gospel call to care for the poor.

Inspired by Gospel values, The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) is an international organization of men and women joined together in spiritual growth, dedicated to offering person-to-person service to those who are in need, living on the margins, or experiencing homelessness. Founded in Paris in 1833,  SVdP has been actively serving the most vulnerable communities throughout the United States for almost 200 years. In 2019, a group of parishioners from St. Martin of Tours Church, Martinsville IN, began the local Martinsville Indiana Conference. Since then, we have been blessed to be supported by St. Martin of Tours' parishioners, members of the community and various grants - enabling us to provide tens of thousands of dollars in yearly support to our Morgan County, IN neighbors in need. We meet twice per month to pray, review our activities and determine ways we can be better stewards of the moneys entrusted to us.

Our major activities include:

  • Responding to our Helpline calls. While some calls are inquiries about services available in our community, most involve follow up visits either in-person or by phone to determine what our neighbors in need are dealing with.  Our assistance is limited by our funds, but the number of calls and dollars provided continues to increase. Examples of assistance include rent, beds, utilities, vouchers for furniture from Habitat Restore, car repairs, clothing for children, etc.
  • We supply food and toiletries to the Red Barn Food Pantry and Churches In Mission Food Pantry, offering either ongoing support or for special needs and circumstances.
  • Sack lunches are prepared and distributed by our SVdP Society members and volunteers of St. Martin of Tours Church for our neighbors who make use of the Red Barn Food Pantry. On the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month, after the morning mass, 30 sandwiches are prepared at St. Martin of Tours Church and delivered to the Red Barn.

Parish volunteers are welcomed for all our activities and we welcome those who may feel called to become members of our SVdP Society. Donations are gratefully accepted and we appreciate the parish allowing us to be included in the 2nd collection on the 5th Sundays of the year. We welcome anyone to join us, no matter their faith; and we want to be clear that no one has to be a member to volunteer.
